Yves Bergquist is an AI researcher, and the Director of the “AI & Neuroscience in Media” Project at USC’s Entertainment Technology Center, where his team is leading research into applying artificial intelligence to build next-generation applications for the media industry.
Yves is also CEO of AI startup Corto, which is building a semantic knowledge engine to help media and entertainment companies develop deep, “genomics”-type insights into their content and how it impacts media audiences. The Corto technology is built on top of the OpenCog open source AI platform, which lays the foundations of neural-symbolic Artificial General Intelligence.
At ETC, Yves and his team manage a half dozen research and development projects funded by all 6 studios and tech companies such as Cisco, Nagra-Kudelski, Microsoft, Google, and Technicolor. These include: using AI and neuroscience to hack the cognitive relationships between audiences and stories, modeling algorithmic structures of narrative and “interestingness” in film, and building a semantic and geographic map of fan communities to model the epidemiology of media trends. Besides his family, he has a passion for the brain, surfing, cheese, and very fast cars.
